A swing point is a support or resistance level which price tends to bounce off of. A support level is a price which a stock tends not to go below: a floor. Conversely, a resistance level is a price which a stock tends to not exceed: a ceiling.

Support and resistance levels are created from swing points. The previous swing point serves as a support level for an uptrend and a resistance level for a downtrend.

Swing points are not necessarily static. A moving average may act as a swing point.

A breakout is a transition from ranging to trending. A breakout often happens when price vectors past a swing point.

If the regular session has been underway for 2+ hours, the day’s high and low may act as swing points, as may VWAP.
